Conundrum: New Confederate Monument or Save Endagered Battlefields?

July 21, 2009

My “good friend” Clint Lacy has posted pictures of the recent dedication of the JO Shelby monument in Shelby’s hometown of  Waverly, Mo.  Now the SCV or anyone else has the right to spend their hard earned cash however they want, but I cannot help but think of how much that bronze statue cost and to what real historical end.  On the other hand, the thousands of dollars could have gone to save a real battlefield where men died for what they believed in…whether right or wrong.

But I am sure this Shelby monument has it purpose of pushing the SCV/Neo-Confederate Movement in a new or profound direction under the guise of southern heritage.

  1. First, thanks for linking to the story and helping to publicize this historic event!

Second, the monument was funded by citizens in Waverly, not the SCV.

Sorry to blow your theory about a super secret Neo-Confederate plot.

It was of course, highly attended by the Sons of Confederate Veterans :>)

    • Glad I could help…

Like I said, they have the right to spend their money however they like; it is just a shame to see it go for something like this when actual battlefields are being paved over. Money better spent, but that is just my humble opinion.

I never imagined it was some secret plot other than to try and mold people’s understanding of the war from a southern slant. I would never imagine the people of that town or the SCV providing money to national battlefield today in light of the fact that slavery is placed into the interpretations at those battlefields. If anything, that is the true blow to the southern movement and the SCV.
