Here are the remains of the Reidsville, North Carolina Confederate monument that once sat Northern end of the town in a traffic roundabout. The monument was struck by a car and the damage was done. As you can see from the picture below there was not much protection from traffic afforded to the monument.
There has been a great amount written about what should be done with the Reidsville monument from not replacing to fixing the damanged one to putting a new monument up in the same place or putting up a new one in the local cemetery where it would not likely be damaged again. There is even a petition to sign to help save the monument but as of the day of this post there are only 314 signatures out of a goal of 1000. The later proposal seems like the best decision based on cost and possible future damage. However Confederate Heritage defenders are not satisfied with that decision. But as you can again see from the pictures below, the cemetery is only about a mile from where the monument once stood and is not in the line of traffic of a city of 15,000 people.
There is also a question I have when looking at the site of the old monument, could it not be placed in the grassy areas just to the North on either side of the street?
By David’s criteria, yes the monument has been destroyed…but only by accident despite conspiracy theories to the contrary.
The last thing many residents want is controversy in a town where many businesses have closed in the tough economy—and where everyone involved seems to know each other.
Conspiracy theories abound that Mr. Vincent, who is black and lives in Greensboro, about 22 miles from Reidsville, wrecked the statue on purpose, even though it almost killed him and destroyed his van. Police found no basis for such theories, Mayor Festerman said. Mr. Vincent has an unresolved traffic citation for the crash.
“I hate that it happened,” said Mr. Vincent, 41.
Asked what should happen to the statue now, he said, “That ought to be up to the people of Reidsville.”
So this again fall in the lose column for David as the statue/monument will be replaced in the town and it was not nafarious reasons that Neo-confederates usually believe that is behind the demise of these monuments.
This now puts David’s record at 0-5-1…not good!
